CELEBRATING CULTURAL DIVERSITY

Culture they say is the total way of life of a particular people living in a particular place. Nigerian’s culture is as multi-ethnic as the people therein but as ‘multi’ as it may be, each has unique characteristics. There are over 500 ethnic groups in Nigeria with the three largest being Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa.

In the past, much importance was attached to activities like cultural dances where school children are taught to showcase the dressing, songs and dance steps of different tribes. However, the negative impact of westernization has spread its tentacles to every area of the Nigerian state, thus influencing and changing the culture of many tribes and ethnic groups in the country.

For students, parents and member of staff of St. Catherine’s Crèche, Nursery and Primary school, celebrating Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage is not only necessary, but of utmost priority. This is what informed the celebration of Cultural Day in the school, where everybody was dressed in gorgeous indigenous cultural attires. Various songs were rendered in Yoruba, Hausa, and other local languages.

As a school, the classroom is where you see students from the Igbo culture, Yoruba, Hausa and other cultures sitting down to receive lectures. We try to imbibe in them that spirit of unity for them to work together and live together at a tender age.
